The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and nine community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

The Clinical Nutrition Manager (CNM) is the supervisor for the Clinical Nutrition section of Nutrition and Food Services (N&FS;) and directs a comprehensive nutrition therapy program. The Clinical Nutrition Manager is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating clinical nutrition therapy and nutrition education programs. The CNM supports the facility mission, strategic goals, and service goals. The incumbent coordinates clinical nutrition activities with the co-manager, other services, units, clinics, and the local community. Major duties include, but not limited to:

  • Assists the Chief, in providing leadership to Nutrition & Food Service, which consists of professional staff, non-professional staff, volunteers and dietetic interns. Coordinates implementation of initiatives and presents conclusions and recommendations to staff at departmental meetings.

  • Performs all duties of subordinate Clinical Dietitians and assists with the direction of a personnel management program for the service by providing recommendations to the Chief regarding personnel actions including selections, promotions, reassignments, retention, and recommendations for adverse actions pertaining to employee performance or conduct.

  • Functions as a professional and technical advisor to clinical staff, other allied healthcare professionals, program directors, and mangers throughout the Medical Center.

  • Reviews and updates nutrition care manual based on latest research and evidence based practice.

  • Ensures the materials utilized in patient education are based on current literature, practice, and research.

  • Recommends approval for incentive and special contribution awards and rewards employees for good performance. Encourages positive praise for staff on a routine basis. Directs the provision of nutrition therapy by supervising the activities of Clinical Dietitians and Dietetic Interns.

Work Schedule: 8am - 4:30pm, 8:30am - 5pm (*TOD will vary, based on staff's needs. Will work one weekend per quarter, otherwise TOD is set Monday- Friday). Financial Disclosure Report: Not required

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.

Education and Supervised Practice:

(1) The individual must have earned a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent and fulfilled each of the following criteria:

(a) Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE).

(b) Completed an ACEND accredited or approved supervised practice program. Supervised practice programs are post-baccalaureate degree programs that provide supervised practice experiences which meet the eligibility requirements and accreditation standards of ACEND, formally known as CADE. Completion of a coordinated program in dietetics fulfills the requirements of a supervised practice program. Time spent in a dietetic internship or supervised practice program does not qualify as creditable experience.

(2) Individuals who have earned college and/or university degrees outside the United States and its territories also must have their transcripts evaluated by a foreign transcript evaluation service to determine if their degree is equivalent to a degree granted by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States. Validation of a foreign degree does not eliminate the need for verification of completion of didactic program, dietetic internship, or coordinated program requirements. The completion of ACEND didactic program requirements and at least a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college/university or foreign equivalent are necessary for eligibility to enter an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program.c. Registration/Certification. All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

Preferred Experience: Master's Degree in Clinical Nutrition (or similar field), 10 years of clinical experience (inpatient and outpatient experience) and 3-5 years of supervising employees.

Specialized Experience: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  1. Ability to develop, maintain, and supervise a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies to assure compliance with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities.

  2. Knowledge of the principles of program management and oversight required to develop program goals and objectives, administer and monitor program, evaluate program outcomes/accomplishments, set and redefine priorities, and implement effective solutions in processes and/or systems as needed.

  3. Ability to act as a consultant for staff.

  4. Ability to determine the continuing education needs of staff and appropriate resources to meet those needs.

  5. Knowledge of human resource management principles and the ability to manage/supervise, i.e, plan, organize, delegate, direct, control, review activities of groups of subordinates.

  6. Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition care and the treatment of complex cases in clinical settings in order to develop, implement, and coordinate best practices and supervise clinical nutrition staff.

Grade Determinations: Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11).
